The first
British Open Golf tournament to be staged at Royal Lytham since
1995 was always expected to bring many executive and charter
aircraft to Blackpool with both Golfers and those who could afford
it arriving on the Fylde coast by air to watch or participate in
the event. We weren't to be disappointed, despite the first
scheduled arrival turning out to be a hoax!

32 bizjets, 4 propjets and 4
airliners were noted over the week, plus numerous helicopters and
GA visitors.
Cessna Citation's made up the
majority of bizjets with 9 different models noted, though the
Gulfstream 5 also made it's presence felt with 4 examples noted.
First visits of type included the Boeing Business Jet.
Sunday
15th July
With
two executive aircraft expected to arrive for the start
of the British Open Golf tournament, all eyes were on
Squires Gate this morning. Unfortunately, neither turned
up. The morning weather played a major part in this, as at best
conditions
were atrocious.
The
afternoon brightened up, the sun came out .... and we
had our first visitors for the Open Golf! NetJets
Europe Citation 650 CS-DNG arrived just a little
later than planned to drop off a participant in the
event - it nightstopped. Evening arrivals included
David Duval's Challenger 604 N317FX of Flexjets
and Nick Price's Gulfstream 3 N57NP.

Monday
16th July
A
day set to be dominated by Open Golf traffic didn't
disappoint with the early arrival of Ernie Els' Hawker 800XP
ZS-DDT,
the first visit from a South African-registered aircraft
for many years. Next aircraft in was Westair's
Gulfstream 5 EI-WGV, with the 'star of the
tournament', to and from Shannon over an hour later than
originally planned. This only the second visit of a
Gulfstream 5, the first being N502GV
on 27/7/98. Belgium King Air OO-SKL visited just after
midday in the smart revised livery of Skyservice.

17th July
Another
day, and more Golf visitors! Newly-registered Learjet 60
OY-LJM of Flexjets was the first movement of the
day and was soon followed in by Beech 300 N195AL,
which was also present during the middle of last month
(as pictured). Our second Gulfstream 5 visit in two days
(overall our third-ever) occurred when 'Greg Norman's' N1GN
touched down just after 11am.
Star
of day for many local GA enthusiasts was Bell 430 N431WH,
which is believed to be US-based (American Football
helmet on fuselage) and possibly arrived in place of
Boeing Business Jet N737WH, which had planned to visit
today.
The
afternoon saw conditions deteriorate but the early
evening arrival of Falcon 900 HB-IUW brightened
things up - albeit two hours later than expected. It
parked in the centre of the airfield.

Wednesday
18th July
With
nothing new expected to arrive for the Golf, Swiss
Citationjet HB-VMT surprised all when it made a
brief appearance, staying just over an hour on the main
apron during the morning. The only known arrival was the
second
visit of Greg Norman's Gulfstream 5 N1GN and
though it was set to stay until Sunday, it only made a
short return visit during the evening and departed
direct to West Palm Beach, Florida - the Golfer having
pulled out of the event during the day.

Brazilian
Falcon 50 PP-PMV was as early arrival from
Luton, and stayed on the main apron for most of the day,
departing late afternoon. Other executive visitors
during the
day included Gulfstream
4 N590HM, which made a brief appearance. Falcon 900
VP-BRO,
which made two visits, Spanish Citation EC-GOV
and finally Swiss Citation
560XL HB-VMU, at teatime which nightstopped.

Friday
20th July
The
first Open Golf charters of the week saw two Fokker
50s arrive during the morning. VLM sent in their
'latest', OO-VLS and OY-EBD of Newair,
which arrived from the Stansted.
There were also two more Golf-related executive arrivals
- BAe 125s G-BJDJ and EI-RRR made their
first visits of the weekend either side of lunchtime.
Beech 300 G-BZNE was the sole propjet visitor and
was present on the main apron during the afternoon.

21st July
European Aviation
Boeing 737-200 G-CEAJ
arrived in place of the expected G-CEAG during the
morning and was the third of four charters expected
during the week. The aircraft carries European's
executive livery and wore TCS Expeditions
titles along the fuselage.
The
appropriately registered and smartly painted N1KE
of sports clothing giant Nike, and the bland but
nonetheless beautiful N90AM both increased our
running total of Gulfstream 5 visits during the day.
Other 'biz' included more first-visits from the Netjets
and Flexjets European fleets with Hawker 800 CS-DNT
and Learjet 60 OY-LJD.

Sunday
22nd July
The
climax of the Open Golf tournament brought in more
visitors by air, giving Blackpool it's busiest day for
movements so far this year - aircraft were turned away
at one point!
Star
visitors of the day, if not the whole week, were Boeing
737-800 LN-RCZ of SAS, full of Scandinavian Golf
enthusiasts, and our first visit from as Boeing
Business Jet - Privatair's HB-IIO. Both graced
the main apron simultaneously during early evening.
More
executive aircraft continued to arrive to collect
Golfers, including Gulfstream 2 N800PM and Falcon
900 N910CS, and further aircraft from the Netjets
and Flexjets European fleets. 8 visiting 'bizjets' were
seen together at one point - this doesn't often happen
at Blackpool!

German
Learjet 55 D-CWAY arrived as planned during the
morning and made a brief visit along with Citations CS-DNF
and OO-MMP. All remaining visitors from the Golf
had departed by lunchtime as Europa's and Extra's
replaced the Gulfstreams and Citations (it was nice
while it lasted!)
